1. Who inspires you?

The students at Don College inspire me each and every day. There is no greater example of their commitment, talent, enthusiasm and team work than their performance of Seussical. Every performance has had a full house and the season is sold out.

Don College musical director Michelle Best.

2. What are you reading and how do you like to relax and wind down at the weekend?

I have just finished reading a collection of short stories called Only the Animals – quite an astonishing read by a very original and literary writer. I am an avid reader and I drink lots of coffee in Ulverstone cafes too. It’s easy to unwind on the North West coast – it’s so peaceful and relaxed.

3. What thing couldn’t you live without and what are your three favourite things?

I couldn’t live without laughter. There are funny things all around us and people have their eyes shut and miss them. My other favourite things are my family, of course, and theatre. Whether I am watching a live show, performing onstage, directing a production or writing a script, theatre has always been my passion. I love cooking and fresh flowers too!

4. If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and what would you eat?

It’s a toss up between Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and Hugh Jackman. Maybe Hugh because we could talk about his amazing success in musical theatre on Broadway. I would prefer that he not talk about his wife. We could eat some local produce such as a lovely soft cheese, maybe served on his torso rather than a cheese board–just to save on the washing up! Hugh would be up for that, I’m sure.

5. What do you know now that you wish you had known before?

That the Internet is both a blessing and a curse particularly for this current generation of ‘‘digital natives’’. We have lost some precious things, I fear.

6. If you had a magic wand, what would you wish for?

I have been lucky enough to have some of my play scripts accepted by Australian and an international script company. I have had one performed in Australia but would love to have some performed internationally. I would just have to get myself to opening night, wherever in the world that might be!

7. Do you have a favourite place?

New York closely followed by the North-West coast of Tasmania. They are so similar!

8. Most embarrassing moment?

Other people cause me embarrassment, those cringeworthy moments that you are powerless to prevent. I get embarrassed for people who don’t know when to keep quiet. Sometimes less is more. If everyone around you is checking their phone, you’ve probably talked too long.

9. What’s a defining moment in your life?

I have had many and they are small moments that have really profoundly affected me. Usually those moments are the kindness of strangers – the willingness of others to reach out and give you the gift of time. That’s what makes travel so enlightening. It’s the precious gift of a smile or an exchange that strangers offer you so generously, provided you have your own heart and mind open to receive them.

10. What do you daydream about?

I don’t tend to daydream. I prefer to live in the moment and be happy with the present or at least accepting of it!
